We’re not saying references are not important.
References are important! We’re just saying there’s a better way to let people know you have them. Why? Because people are expecting you to have them. So why waste that precious space!
Do you want your recruiter spending two of those six seconds reading about how you will only fork it over if they ask?
What you can (and should) do is leave it off altogether and bring your list of references to the interview. Ideally, this list will be in a similar style as your resume and cover letter for one consistent package.
Of course, there is always the exception! Some clients can fill exactly one and a half pages no matter how we move it around. In order to fill the whole two pages, we have added reference information to the bottom of the second page.
